Why the name change?

This web site is now called Cary Sidewalks. Support for pedestrian access has greatly improved in recent projects due in large part to the actions of Town of Cary staff and members of the Town Council and Appearance Commission. Involvement of neighborhood citizens in the planning and approval local projects is also helping to encourage neighborhood-friendly development.

Here are some examples of recent projects that include considerations for pedestrians, unlike some of the less-walkable examples shown on this site:

Harrison Pointe Shopping Center, Site Plan (99-SP-024)

Excerpts from the Review Summary:

"Through the course of review of this plan, and with input from the adjoining Royal Oaks neighborhood, several modifications have been made to the plan which include:

A central pedestrian plaza area was incorporated into the plan between the two primary building locations.

A clock tower will be located near the intersection of N. Harrison Ave. and NE Maynard Rd. that will function both as an entry feature and a pedestrian focal point for the development.

An extensive network of sidewalks will be located throughout the development originating from the clock tower and incorporating the out-parcels with through pedestrian access from the adjoining roadways into the shopping center. The sidewalk system will also include a future pedestrian trail connection from the shopping center eastward to the proposed future Black Creek Greenway location."

Additional provisions in the site plan:

".... The developer shall construct a paved greenway connection to the proposed extension of the Black Creek Greenway, to be located north and east of the shopping center, at the time that the Black Creek Greenway is constructed or when the adjoining eastern apartment communities have developed a trail to the shopping center...

...[Town staff] Recommended that pedestrian crosswalks be installed at the intersection of N. Harrison Ave. and Maynard Rd. and across N. Harrison Ave. at the proposed northern signalized drive into the shopping center...

...To install sidewalk along the southern side of the northern entry into the shopping center as a part of the Phase One plan of development...."

CARY SENIOR CENTER Project Number: 99-SP-128

From Planning and Zoning Board review:

"Staff recommends approval...subject to providing a pedestrian crosswalk and a sidewalk along Maury O Dell Place."

Town Council Asks Staff for Plan to Expedite Sidewalk Construction (Sept 9, 1999)

As reported by Eric Karnes in the public forum at www.carycbg.org :

"Council, acting upon a suggestion by Glen Lang, asked staff to prepare a recommendation on how to accelerate sidewalk construction. The Council vote was unanimous, and several members, including Mayor Koka Booth and council members Jack Smith and Jess Ward, spoke in favor of finding a mechanism for speeding up sidewalk construction....Thanks to Glen Lang for raising the issue and to his colleagues on Council for voting to at least consider how to appropriate more money for sidewalks in Cary.
