Black
Creek Greenway
The Black Creek Greenway, part of the Cary Greenway
system, is a popular place to walk, bike, and skate. Pictured
here is the Dynasty Drive entrance.
The Black Creek Greenway extends from Dynasty Drive to
Lake Crabtree park, passing underneath high-traffic roads such as
Cary Parkway and Weston Parkway. A bridge and unpaved road extend
north to connect the greenway with Umstead State Park. A southern
extension of the greenway to Godbold park at Maynard Road is under
construction during 1999, and future extension will connect it with
downtown Cary.
Cary's greenways are attractive for walking because of
their natural surroundings, shade from the hot summer sun, proximity
to streams and lakes, and separation from vehicle traffic, noise, and
pollution. Greenways typically run along streams at low elevations
where potential flooding makes the land unsuitable for development,
and allows the greenways to pass under roads without adding much
expense to roadway construction. Existing greenways in Cary include
10 miles of public paths and 25 miles of private greenways. These
trails connect primarily to residential and recreational areas;
however, Cary's master plan is to extend and connect these greenways
into a network of routes to encourage walking and cycling to
shopping, schools, and workplaces including Research Triangle Park ,
Raleigh, and Durham.
