Median Refuges and Stairs at Chick-fil-A

Raised center medians provide a buffer between opposite lanes of traffic, so pedestrians can cross just one half of the road at a time. This is more comfortable, much safer and much more convenient than trying to cross all of the traffic lanes at once, especially on roads with many lanes and high speeds. Median refuge islands are paved surfaces in the median that provide a good surface for walking or standing while crossing the median.

Here are some median refuges installed in Waverly Place leading to Chick-fil-A:

An appropriate walking surface has been paved in the median where pedestrians will cross.

Here's a second median refuge leading to the same restaurant. The Waverly Place shopping/activity center is behind the viewer. The parking lot at Chick-fil-A sometimes overflows, but there is plenty of available parking at the edge of the Waverly Place parking lot just across the street. Patrons often park there and walk across.

Two staircases connect the street crossing locations to the Waverly Place parking lot. The topography here ruled out wheelchair ramps, but there are other accessible routes nearby. Adding stairs to increase the redundancy and convenience of pedestrian routes is always appreciated.
